Next Meetup: 24th June (Sunday) 1-3pm

Hi everyone,

The date for the next meet-up has been set, it will be on the 24th June (Sunday) 1-3pm.  This time it was pretty clear which of the options was the popular choice :)  Hope the forecast is right and it is a nice day, I’ve had enough of the rainy season already :p

Please bring along your friends if you think they would be interested in meeting a wide range of interesting people from both the Japanese and International communities.  We’re going to incorporate some of the fantastic ideas suggested during the group discussion of May’s meeting.
See you there!

Hi everyone,

Did you have a great Golden Week?  Mine was pretty quiet but I did manage to watch a movie at the cinema which is one of the reasons why Golden Week is called Golden Week but I’m sure you knew that  :)

Same as before, to organise this month’s meeting we would like to ask you which of the below dates is best for you.  Please leave a comment with your preferences by the 17th (Thursday) if possible.  I’ll count up the votes and announce the details though the usual channels of communication (this site, facebook, meetup and the newsletter).  For meetup members reading this, we usually have around 14-20 members attending, even though meetup.com might show lower numbers.

  • Saturday (土) 19th May
  • Sunday (日) 20th May
  • Saturday (土) 26th May
  • Sunday (日) 27th May

Thanks for your help and we hope see you at OpenCoffee Osaka soon!

Michael Frankland’s Presentation at OpenCoffee Osaka – March

Hey, sorry for the delay in posting this up.  This is the presentation that Michael gave at OpenCoffee Osaka’s March meet-up.  It’s a fantastic presentation on the mobile web, what is mobile-friendly design, what you have to be concerned with and why it is important.  He also goes into lessons he’s learnt in his first month of his new venture motache.  You’ll find his blog, packed with useful information including good and bad (terrible) examples of mobile design at: http://motache.com/blog

I’ve split it up into 2 bits, the first one being the main presentation and the second bit being the Q&A.  I’ll try to post the second part soon. PS. You should be able to view this on your iPhone or Android device in the spirit of Michael’s presentation :)

Planning for April’s Meeting

Hi everyone,

As for the past couple of meet-ups we’re going to ask you which dates are the best. Unfortunately due to prior commitments there aren’t as many days we can hold April’s meeting on.  Here are the list of dates, all of them Sundays.

We know a lot of people will be busy this month, especially with hanamis, so if you can’t make it, we hope to see you next month.  But if you can, it’s going to be a special meet-up so please leave a comment and tell your friends.  If you’ve never been and are wondering what it is like, you can get a quick impression from this post on last month’s meet-up.

March’s Open Coffee Osaka was simply amazing

For the second month in a row, I am not sure where to start, March’s meetup was so amazing on so many levels.  Maybe thank-yous would be the most appropriate starting point.

Thanks to Michael, who delivered a captivating presentation on mobile web, and sharing his experiences of the first month as a start-up and his project Motache.  I loved the time-travelling parts, they brought back memories, luckily he didn’t mention the period of IE4.  I am working on editing the video of his presentation and it will be posted here and also on Michael’s own blog soon.

Thanks also to Yosoda-san who brought some delicious Tansan-senbei, Naho who brought us some chocolate and Bemmu who brought us yummy sudachi manju from Tokushima.  Everything was eagerly devoured.  Andreas promised he will bring along some of his very special olive oil imported from Greece next time :)

In total there were 26 attendees, which is our most ever.  Thanks to everyone who helped spread the word and brought along friends.  I can’t emphasis enough how much the concept of OpenCoffee belongs to, and its success is due to, you the members and not us the organisers.

Special highlights for me this time were meeting Ryan and seeing his amazing concept art, chatting with Bemmu (who also joined our small hackers nijikai afterwards), and hearing about Kansai RISE from Tuukka and Mikako.  We also ran out of cups again (does that count as a highlight? ;)

I took a small time-lapse video that shows the activity of 3 hours compressed down to 25 seconds.  As Guiliano pointed out it is slightly lop-sided.   I’ll try to do better next time!

Five of our members made announcements, and I will post the details to our facebook group and here.  Announcements about events are always welcomed, but please bring some handouts or printed material.  I can help prepare something if you need assistance.

Well that’s my short summary of the meetup from my, if you attended March’s meeting, please leave a comment telling us your highlights of the day. I’m sure it would be helpful to people who haven’t been yet.

And we’ll be asking for comments on the best day for Open Coffee Osaka’s April meet-up soon. Hope to see you there!
